The Hyde Road Covered Bridge, also called the Richard P. Eastman Covered Bridge, in Yellow Springs, is being named in honor of Dick Eastman, who was the Greene County Engineer from 1974 through 1996.

Richard P. Eastman, who loved covered bridges, raised his family just south of the structure and was instrumental in funding and designing the bikeway that the bridge crosses. The new covered bridge replaced an uncovered, deteriorated steel bridge that had been closed for a year.

The new structure, built in 2014 and becoming part of the Little Miami Bike Trail, features a 77-foot span using a Howe Truss, a popular design from the mid-to-late 1800s. The project was designed by Smolen Engineering of Ashtabula and was built by R.G. Zachrich Construction of Defiance for $480,000, Geyer said.
